LEARNING BY PLAYING: an application of the process of embodying distinctions

Alfonso Reyes Alvarado. Rector Universidad de Ibagué.

This paper is about learning and teaching. Our invitation is to distinguish between knowledge, knowing, understanding and learning. Knowledge is an assessment made by an observer; knowing refers to our capacity to make distinctions in a particular domain of action; understanding refers to the process of grounding these distinctions in a particular history and embedding them in a particular tradition; and learning is the process by which we embody these distinctions in our actions. Based on these concepts, we develop a model for designing a process of learning and discuss an application we carried out in a post-graduate course. The course was based on the idea of designing and playing games. Finally, we offer some criticism on how learning and teaching are normally understood in schools, universities and organizations.
